Podcasts for Designers
Author of this post: Tara MacKay | About Blog Authors »If you’ve been reading the blog lately, you’ve probably noticed that I’m on a bit of an “(insert Apple thing here) for Designers” kick. First it was Safari plug-ins, then Dashboard widgets, and now podcasts. The is because I’ve recently discovered that though I’m an early adopter, I rarely take full advantage of the features that come with my new gadgets and software. I bet some of you are the same way!

Podcasts for designers, direct to earbuds everywhere.
I’m like a grandma when it comes to podcasts, (though come to think of it, many grandmas are probably more podcast-savvy than I). I’ve had an iPod since the first generation of battery-eating bricks, but only recently have I started downloading these little audio and video shows. Once I started looking for them, I found many that are perfect for designers. Here are some of the standouts.
There are many podcasts that focus on technology and software, one of the best being Photoshop Killer Tips, hosted by Matt Kloskowski, who also happens to be an instructor at Sessions! Photoshop Killer Tips is updated five days a week, so there’s no shortage of useful information here. But if you need even more Adobe tips in video podcast format, check out Terry White’s Adobe Creative Suite Video Podcast. There’s a new episode at least once a week, and the show covers topics including InDesign, After Effects, Premiere, and of course Photoshop.
If you don’t have a video Ipod, that’s not a problem, because there are many great audio-only podcasts. Boagworld is one of them. It’s hosted by Paul Boag of the UK design firm Headscape, and its subject is web design. Recent broadcasts have addressed usability testing, intranets, and design by committee. Shows are released on a near-weekly basis. If you need a little humor to help you through your next web design job, try listening to You Suck at Web Design by Matthew Jordon of Electric Dynamic.
Are you more an illustrator than a software or web design geek? The Illustrative Designer hosted by Von Glitschka has interviews with top illustrators. It’s an enjoyable podcast, but unfortunately, new episodes are released only sporadically. Strangely enough, Von Glitschka was also recently interviewed for another larger illustration podcast produced by Illustration Mundo called ICONIC. ICONIC features interviews wuth illustrators and cartoonists and is full of inspiration.
This is enough to get me started, and I’m trying hard to un-grandmafy myself. Still, more couldn’t hurt. What are your favorite podcasts?

Appclinic and RookieDesigner are both good ones.
http://appclinic.com/ (Both available here)
Appclinic is a video podcast of tutorials revolving around design apps.
RookieDesigner is a podcast aimed toward newer designers, talking about various aspects of the design profession.
I’ve been listening to them for quite awhile. Appclinic used to be called QuickTips for Designers.

Just found your blog and it’s great. Boagworld is a great podcast with lots of agency insight. It was published in the UK with a mag called .Net. I’ve stopped buying the mag but still listen to the podcasts.
